The allocation of scores draws attention to differences between a participant’s result and what has been designated as the ‘assigned value’. Assigned values for qualitative (presence/absence) examinations are determined from the sample design and the results obtained in the FEPTU (Food and Environmental Proficiency Testing Unit) laboratory, although participants’ results are also considered to help identify anomalies with the sample. Assigned values for enumerations are determined using robust statistics; the participants’ median value is designated the assigned value.
